ITR-7 Filing – For Trusts, NGOs & Institutions

What is ITR-7?

ITR-7 is the Income Tax Return form for persons including companies who are required to file returns under the following sections of the Income Tax Act, 1961:

 

  • Section 139(4A): Income from property held under trust or other legal obligations wholly/partly for charitable or religious purposes.

  • Section 139(4B): Political parties (if total income exceeds maximum exemption limit).

  • Section 139(4C): Institutions like scientific research associations, news agencies, hospitals, universities, and educational institutions.

  • Section 139(4D): Colleges, universities, or institutions not required to file income/loss return under other provisions.

  • Section 139(4E): Business trusts.

  • Section 139(4F): Investment funds (AIFs).

Who Can File ITR-7?

Individuals, HUFs, Firms, and Companies not claiming exemption under the above sections (they must use ITR-1 to ITR-6 as applicable).

  • Applicable to entities claiming income exemptions under Section 11 & 12.

  • Mandatory e-filing with Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).

  • Disclosure of donations, grants, and exempt income.

  • Reporting of audit details if applicable under Section 12A(1)(b).

  • Detailed financial statements submission (Income & Expenditure, Balance Sheet).
